The following describes what software may be installed globally on Matrix.
Users have 2 reasons to use Matrix, updating their webspace and if Spoon is down. Thus only the essentials need to be installed from CSW. This includes
- Unix basics (awk, sed, grep, perl, python)
- System (MySQL, sudo, ClamAV, mrtg)
- Website (imagemagick, nano, vim, emacs)
- Network (nc, irssi, mutt, slrn, telnet, ssh)
- Development (gcc, svn, make, flex, LaTeX)
- Libraries
- Netsoc specific (hey, netris)
That encompasses the vast majority of what users do on Matrix, and should be enough to take advantage of the firewall and do coursework. Compiling from source is reserved for system software.
Any user program that is installed on Matrix should also be installed on Spoon.
