Introduction
Jabber is an instant messaging system. Netsoc maintains a Jabber server on an external machine. It allows instant messaging between users, access to external IM networks (MSN, AIM and ICQ) and access to IRC. Every user gets a Jabber account. Your jabber password is not the same as your Spoon password. If you have forgotten your Jabber password, Contact Support.
Clients
The Netsoc recommended client is Psi. Note that Gaim and Adium do NOT currently support service discovery (the Jabber techology used for access to external IM networks).
Connection Details
A guide to using Jabber can be found here; if connecting from within Trinity follow the "Private Machine" instructions, even if you are connecting from a lab, with the amendment that the port to be used is 443, not 563.
MyZone IM
Trinity's new Google portal, MyZone, incorporates a TCD branded Google Talk instant messaging system. If you wish to connect to this from Psi or another client, look at the instructions here. Note that there is a mistake in the Psi instructions. The correct port is 5222 NOT 5223. You should connect via the proxy as per the proxy instructions in the tutorial for connecting to the Netsoc Jabber server here.
You can NOT currently talk to users of the MyZone IM from the Netsoc Jabber server as the two are not federated at this time.
Google Talk
You can talk to Google Talk users by simply adding 'user@gmail.com' (Google Talk is another Jabber service).
SSL Certificate
The Jabber server's SSL certificate is self-signed and this will cause a warning message in Psi if you connect to the server using SSL. This is normal behaviour. Importing the Netsoc CA certificate into Psi's certificate store will NOT fix this problem as the Jabber server's certificate was not signed by the Netsoc CA. The warning message can be suppressed by selecting the "Ignore SSL warnings" option on the Connection tab of the account settings.
