Here is a list of commonly used abbreviations within IRC. Note that some of these have grown from the Intersocs IRC Network or have been imported it it from other sources, so they may not be readily used elsewhere.

The more common abbreviations are marked in bold type.

aiui As I Understand It
bak Back at keyboard (LeetSpeak variation: b@k)
bb Bye bye
bbl Be back later
brb Be right back
bn Bonne nuit (French for goodnight)
bg Bad game
bj Bon jeux (roughly French for good game)
btw By the way
foad **** off and die (only bold people use this)
ftw For the win (LeetSpeak variation: 4tw)
gg Good game

lo Hello
lol Laughing out loud ("lol" is banned in #netsoc)
lolz Laughing out loud sarcastically (this is also banned in #netsoc due to containing the substring "lol")
mdr Mort de rire (roughly French for lol)
mj Mauvais jeux (roughly French for bad game)
nn Night night
psc Prep school c*** (usage: to chastise another user of IRC due to their prudish attitude)
stfu Shut the **** up (see foad for usage)
tbh To be honest (the use of this phrase is not to be encouraged - take note, Mark)
tbj Très bon jeux (roughly French for very good game)
tmj Très mauvais jeux (roughly French for very bad game)
vbg Very bad game
vgg Very good game
wtf What the ****? (Also Why/Where/When/Who)
ytf Why the ****?
