Internet Relay Chat is a way to communicate in realtime with people around the world. It supports both channels where several people can talk to each other and private messages between users. It predates things like MSN, ICQ and AIM.

Netsoc run an IRC server at irc.netsoc.tcd.ie, which is part of the Intersocs IRC Network. For instructions on using it see Chat.

Netsoc also allow connections to IRC servers outside college on port 6667. Irssi is installed on both Spoon and Matrix. We also provide ident.

All users of IRC should read about IRC Abbreviations, LeetSpeak and gg.

External IRC

External IRC is currently broken due to the system of hacks required to install it. They are currently incompatible with the kernel that Spoon is running We also run a server that is accessible from outside college. This requires SSL and your Spoon username and password. This is currently running on irc-external.netsoc.tcd.ie:7000.
