FAQs - 2 - Connecting to Matrix
You can logon to matrix using the SSH protocol. To do this we recommend a program called Putty. When you run this program logging in is a simple 3 step process.
- type matrix.netsoc.tcd.ie into the Host Name field.
- Select SSH as the protocol
- Click open
Yes you can logon from outside college. And it is no diferent than logging on from inside college.
When you got your matrix account you were mailed your usernam and password. You must use these to login. If you have forgotten them then please complete and submit this form.
No one has ever asked that question before, but if you insist, here are some alternatives.

When you login type the command passwd at the prompt.
This will ask you for your old password then it will ask you for your new password twice.

Your password is sent in plain text accross the network when you use telnet. This means anyone who knows what they are doing can find out what your password is.
Use MacSSH and follow these instructions:
- Click 'File' then 'Open Connection'.
- Enter the hostname 'matrix.netsoc.tcd.ie' (or just 'netsoc' if in TCD).
- Ensure the 'Secure Shell' checkbox is enabled.
- Click 'Connect'.
- Enter your netsoc username and password.
- Click 'Ok' to log on.
Alternative:
- Switch to the Finder
- Open a finder window (command-N)
- Click the "Applications" icon in the toolbar
- Open the "Utilities" Folder
- Open Terminal
- In the Terminal window that opens, type in: ssh -l yourmatrixusername netsoc
- you'll be asked to authorize the connection, so type in "yes" (not just "y")
- You're now connected
